The promoter Satara Municipal Council had decided to promote a single stage Competition and invite Architects to submit designs in competition for New Administrative Building of Satara Municipal Council.
Our design drew its for from childhood impression of the “Gad”. After all,the Marathas owe much of their martial success to the art of befriending the terrain and using it to their advantage with hill forts. The structure is imposing, yet approachable. There is no compound wall in front.Instead the structure spreads its arms out forming a plaza, inviting everyone to share the space.
Influence of Maratha fort architecture have been re-interpreted in spatial and visual elements like the winding central staircase, the staged bastion like blocks, the internal courts and the Shivaji statue at the top,Watching over the city. The structure has the scale and monolithic look of solid stone masonry, yet is light and porous. The greens spreading out through and perforated skin are reminiscent of shrubbery pushing through old fort walls.
